I was helping my sons friend move back home today. He just graduated college and is moving back in with his parents. Such are the times these days.

One thing I noticed when we were moving him was his futon bed. I remember these from years ago. They looked a little shaky and I recall that the mattresses were horrible. Granted when you’re young, you can sleep on anything, but even still they were hot and uncomfortable. I never liked them.

After going on my rant about the futon, they set it up and said try it. Sitting on a college students bed is a bit of a scary idea, but lets see if these things have improved over time.

I have to say it felt a lot better than I remember. This futon mattress was very comfortable. Granted I didn’t sleep on it, but felt great. I asked him what type it was. He said it was a traditional type futon mattress. He explained that it’s layers of wool wrapped around a core of cotton and latex I believe. He said he sleeps like a baby on it. He also stated that since it is wool, it controls night sweats by “wicking” the sweat away. Sounds like a good idea.

Another interesting item he has is a touch lamp. Now you can ask what it is, but it is pretty self explanatory. Its a lamp without an on/off switch. You simply touch the metal part of the lamp and it will turn on. Very funky I think.

The problem with todays move was that it was raining and snowing here today. I’m so glad my son’s friend’s parent’s (thats a mouthful) built on aluminum patio covers this spring. Between trying to unload everything and getting it into a cramped house with the rain, the patio cover was a bit of a god send today.

So it was an interesting day, guess I learned a few new things :)

I have to say I have not slept on a futon in years but I used to when I lived in Japan and was younger, it was very comfortable. But I still think that unless you are Japanese and have slept on one on the floor your whole life, at this stage in life I prefer sleeping in a bed. As for the touch lamp I think those are great. I am glad to see you learned two things, but when your adult kids move back in, you are about to learn a lot more I am sure. Good luck to you, this was a fun post.
